    Role of Microorganism
    The removal of carbonaceous BOD, the coagulation of nonsettleable colloidal solids, and the stabilization of organic matter are accomplished biologically using a variety of microorganisms, principally bacteria.
    In the treatment of wastewater, microorganism ( mainly bacteria ) use the soluble organic matter in the waste stream as their main food source. The bacterial population consume the organic compounds and convert them into carbon dioxide, water and energy to produce new cells. Ultimately, the soluble pollutants are converted into insoluble matter, which can be removed from the treated water by bioagglomeration and gravity settling, and sent to disposal.
    Bacteria
    The process of biological treatment takes place during the rapid growth and multiplication of the bacteria in the wastewater. The reproduction or growth of bacterial populations results in a conversion of soluble organic materials present in the wastewater to cell material or protein. Thus, the soluble organic chemicals are removed from the wastewater.
    Bacteria are single-celled microorganism. Most bacteria can be grouped by form into 4 general categories ;
    Bacillus – rod shaped organisms.
    Approximately 2 – 5 micron in length and 1 – 2 microns in diameter.
    Coccus – spherical shaped organisms.
    Approximately 1 – 2 microns in diameter.
    Spirochetes – spiral shaped organisms.
    Length up to 50 micron
    Filamentous – filamentous shaped organisms.
    Length up to 100 micron
    Bacteria cell is composed of proteinaceous material. Its primary directive is to survive and reproduce. The growth of bacteria involves a number of functions, but most critical is the oxidation of a carbon source ( organic chemical ) through respiration ( use of oxygen ) which generates energy ( plus carbon dioxide and water ) that can be utilized for cell maintenance, metabolism and reproduction of additional cells.
