It is a kind of antibiotics belonging to Amino Sugar, which structure is
similar to Neomycin, Gentamicin, kanamycin. It cuts synthesis of protein
by influenceing the functon of 80S Ribosome. Just because of this, it is
toxic to both prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell including bacteria, enzymes, and cells of plants and animals as well as protozoon and worms which is a commonly-chosen reagent in stable infection. When the neo gene is integrated into proper place of the genome of eukaryotic cell , it can start
the transcription of the serials of the coding gene into mRNA to acquire the highly action of the resistant products aminoglycoside phosphotransferase, so that cells can obtain character of resistance to grow in selective culture medium consisting of G418. The selective character of G418 has been
widely used in transforming and knockouting genes, selecting character of resistance and genes-transformed animals. G418 itself is bactericidal and
is effective in sterilizing bacteria. There is little pollution in selecting process with G418.
