The main function of a lighting arrester in an electrical distribution system is to protect all the other equipment from lighting strike.

They' re also used to protect the distribution line from flashover.

An arrester is applied near or to a tool that' s connected to a grounding fase, to make the distribution protection more effective, the arrester must be applied to all fase on every electical pole.

When the system works normal, an arrester is an isolator, but when it hits by a lighting strike, it will turn into a conductor by making a bypass that' s easily pass by the lighting current, so it won' t damage the distribution transformer
