The Boswellia Sorrata produces a sap that has been used in traditional Indian medicine as a treatment for arthritis and inflammatory conditions.

The primary compounds thought to be responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of boswellia are known as boswellic acids. These compounds are thought to interfere with enzymes that contribute to inflammation and pain.

There have only been a handful of studies conducted on the effects of boswellia in treating sports injuries or arthritis, but at least a few have suggested that boswellic acids may possess anti-inflammatory activity at least as potent as common over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin. In one study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, pain and swelling was reduced following 3 months of boswellia use.
