    Design Overview
The Halliburton Otis® PXX Equalizing Prong and Valve Assembly is used
with a Halliburton Otis X® and XN® lock mandrel. It is designed as a plug
choke to hold a pressure differential from above or below the lock when
considerable amounts of sand or other debris is expected above the lock.
This equalizing valve with lock and prong assembly is installed/ retrieved by
    standard wireline methods.
Refer to the Engineering Design Specifications for specific design
    information.
    Design Principle
The valve assembly is threaded to the bottom of the lock and run into the
well. The equalizing prong is inserted with a second wireline trip and has
two sets of packing that seal within the bore of the valve assembly on both
sides of the flow ports. The equalizing prong is designed to extend a
sufficient distance above the lock mandrel so that sand or other debris can
settle around it without covering the fish neck of the prong. A top plugged
central passage through the prong with side outlet holes permits fluid
passage through the prong during insertion and removal. The upper side
outlet hole is placed to reduce the possibility of sand or other debris from
settling, or being drawn into the bore after the prong has been set or during
its removal. Once the prong is removed, flow of well fluids thru the valve
and lock mandrel assembly lifts the sand and other debris from the top of
the lock mandrel. Plugs can be installed in the flow ports to control the rate
    of equalization.

    Disassembly Instructions
Refer to the Engineering Design Specifications, Bill of Material, and
    Drawing.
WARNING Ensure that all required Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE) ( safety
glasses, gloves, steel-toed shoes, and hard hats, if required) is worn and all
Health, Safety, and Environment ( HSE) requirements are met before
commencing the work. Ensure the hand tools are in good condition and the
work area is free of trips and hazards. Maintain good housekeeping
standards in the work area at all times.
Hair must be styled in a manner to prevent exposure to the hazard of
    entanglement or completely covered.
No Jewelry— bracelets, chains, earrings, necklaces, rings, wristwatches,
    ornamental jewelry, etc.
Clothing— No improper clothing that may expose the individual to the risk
of entanglement. This may include ragged, torn, or loose fitting clothing.
No non-tear-away aprons, ties, scarves, hair ribbons, etc.
Pinch Points— When handling and assembling components, keep hands
and fingers away from thread connections and from between moving parts.
Follow proper lifting procedures and keep fingers out of potential pinch
    points.
Ensure proper lifting techniques are utilized, and get help if necessary.
Note The housing ( 2) is attached to the lock mandrel and will not be
present when the prong assembly is pulled from the well. A second wireline
trip will retrieve the housing with the lock mandrel.
    1. Place the assembly in a vise, gripping on the prong ( 1) .
    2. Remove the packing nut ( 8) from the prong ( 1) .
    3. Remove the packing and adapters ( 3 through 7) from the prong ( 1) .
    4. Discard all the used packing.

    5. Clean and inspect all the parts for wear and damage.
WARNING Be sure to wear appropriate Personnel Protective Equipment when cleaning
    the parts.
Pay close attention to threads for burrs that could cause damage upon
    reassembling this valve.
Ensure the cleaning process does not cause environmental pollution.
    Reassembly Instructions
Refer to the Engineering Design Specifications, Bill of Material, and

    1. Place the prong ( 1) in the vise.
CAUTION Do not vise on the packing area. This could cause damage to the sealing
    surface.

    2. Grease and install the packing and adapters ( 3 through 7) onto the
    prong ( 1) .
Note Refer to the Engineering Design Specifications and Assembly
Drawing for the proper quantity, sequence, and direction of the packing
stack. Rearranging the seal order will affect the pressure-holding capability
    of the seals.
    3. Install the packing nut ( 8) onto the lower end of the prong ( 1) . Check
for the proper gap between the packing nut and the packing stack.
    4. Install the housing ( 2) over the packing and the prong ( 1) .
Note Remove any vise and wrench marks.
    5. Test according to the Engineering Design Specifications.
Note It is essential that the assembly be protected from environmental
elements that could cause corrosion, mechanical damage, or degradation of
    these components during storage.
    • All metallic components should be protected with a light oil or suitable
corrosion inhibitor. This includes the mandrel bore.
    • The exposed elastomers should be wrapped in heavy paper to protect
against light, dirt, and mechanical damage.
    • All exposed threads should be protected with suitable closed-ended
    protectors at all times.
