Common name: Paraquat
Chemical name: 1, 1' -dimethyl-4, 4' -bipyridinium
Physical and chemical properties:
Paraquat dichloride forms colourless, hygroscopic crystals, decomposing at 300 , v.p. negligible. Solubility , easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in short-china alcohol, practically insoluble in most other organic solvents.stability stable in neutral and acidic media, but readily oxidized in alkaline media. Tech salts are corrosive to common metals.
Toxicity : Paraquat dichloride
Acute oral LD50 for rats 150 mg/ kg, for mice 104 mg/ kg, for dogs 25-50 mg/ kg, for sheep 70 mg/ kg . Acute percutaneous LD50 for rabbits 236-500 mg paraquat ion/ kg. Irritating to skin and eyes. Absorption through intact human skin is minimal; exposures can cause irritation and a delay in the healing of cuts and wounds; can cause temporary damage to nails. If inhaled, may cause nose bleeding. Other has serious delayed effects if absorbed. Fish toxicitty: TLM( 48hrs.) is 62 ppm for rainbow trout, TLM ( 48 hrs.) is 40 ppm0 for carp. ADI 0.004 mg/ kg b.w.
