• Definition of Lubricating Oil
Lubrication means the reduction of friction between the friction surfaces with lubricant. The lubrication substitutes the solid friction of strong fricational resistance for the solid friction of weak fritional resistance or the status of limit friction in the middle of the liquid friction and solid friction.
• Purpose of Lubrication
The main purpose of lubrication is the reduction of friction. The specification is below.
1) Improvement of efficiency by reducing the friction between two materials contacted each other
2) Extension of the life span of machine by reducing the friction between two materials contacted each other
3) Prevention of burning and sticking by cooling overheated spot
4) Prevention of the rust on a machine and the declination of efficiency
5) Solution of sludge, precise metal, and carbon powder that are contained in deteriorating oil
- Revival Method with Bypass Filter
Cellulose filter is installed with bypass type at the discharging valve of deteriorating oil pump. Through the cellulose filter, impurities of oil are removed during the operation of the machine.
In this method, impurities over ¼-unit particles are removed. Therefore, the life span of oil is extended. The treatment for revival is barely needed. But the essential revival of deteriorating oil is not possible.
• Cause for Deterioration of Lubricating Oil
Even good quality lubricating oil is getting degenerated during use and its nature is declined. This status is called as deterioration of lubricating oil. During the use, lubricating oil receives two kinds of changes.
One is the chemical change that occurs in the lubricating oil itself. The other is the damage of lubricating oil by outside factors.
1) Oxidating conditon by the hydrolysis of hydrogen peroxide
2) Carbonating condition hydrolyzed by high temperature
3) Emulsificating condition decomposed in long-term exposure to water
• Countermeasure for Deterioration of Lubricating Oil
Cleaning of oil is maintained for the prevention of the deterioration of lubricating oil and efficient use. For that, the impurities and oxide in oil should be removed. Conditions below are considered as the prevention for deterioration of lubricating oil.
1) High temperature should be avoided. The temperature of oil shoud be under 60 (140 ).
2) Exposure to air should be avoided. The airtight status should be maintained to prevent foaming of oil.
3) Combination of oil should be avoided.
4) Intrusion of moisture should be prevented.
5) Revival method should be practiced in working sites.
The method of revival of lubricating oil varies. The main methods are below.
1) Filtration method by removing impurities by machine.
2) Physical method by heating the lubricating oil up to 80 (176 ).
3) Chemical method with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate
4) Mechanical method by the centrifugal separator
The lubricating oil is deteriorated during its uses. If the deterioration of lubricating oil is processed over its limits, the lubricating function is declined and may cause accidents. Therefore, the revival treatment or the change with new oil is required. To extend the useful range and life span of lubricating oil, the oil management should be followed and component examination of oil should be performed regularly.
