    COENZYME Q10 - Consumer Information:
Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring substance found in humans, plants and animals. Present in every cell in the body, this coenzyme is responsible for the production of almost all cellular energy and therefore, for good health and survival. Research has shown that coenzyme Q10 can provide relief from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and periodontal disease, in addition to stimulation of the immune system and slowing the ageing process.
Coenzyme Q10 is derived from a fermentation process involving a bacterial culture of beet. The natural form of coenzyme Q10 has been found to be non-toxic and has been used for over adecade by the Japanese to treat a variety of disorders and to boost longevity.
Although the body can produce its own coenzyme Q10, deficiencies are common. In such cases. supplements with this natural form can prove very beneficial. However, if the body¡¯s levels are normal, coenzyme Q10 will have little or no effect.
Similar in chemical structure to vitamin E, coenzyme has a potent antioxidant factor that is known to slow ageing. In the elderly, coenzyme Q10 supplements can lead to increased energy and stamina, and stimulation of the immune system. Age-related periodontal disease has been totally reversed by coenzyme Q10, and healing of gum tissue greatly accelerated.
Studies have shown that coenzyme Q10 levels tend to be abnormally low if the body is under stress, so it is not surprising that supplementation is beneficial in a wide variety of health disorders. Many case studies and clinical trials are documented in Dr. William Lee¡¯s booklet entitled ¡°Coenzyme Q10 ¨C is it our new foundation of youth? A Good Health Guide.¡±
Cardiovascular disease, angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, hyperthyroid, heart failure and hypertension, have all responded well to supplements of coenzyme Q10. It also is thought that the coenzyme may help normalize blood sugar levels in diabetics. It also is thought that the coenzyme Q7 (the rodent equivalent of Coenzyme Q10) produced marked decreases in fasting blood sugar levels after supplementation. Since coenzyme Q10 plays such a key role in energy production, it came as no surprise to researchers that many people suffering from obesity were deficient in this substance. In clinical trials a group given coenzyme Q10 supplements lost twice as much weight as the control group which did not receive the supplement.
A weakened immune system ¨C which can lead to disorders such as cancer, chronic infections, candida, and AIDS ¨C has also responded well to doses of coenzyme 10 in animal and human trials. Since the immune system declines with age, regular supplementation with coenzyme Q10 may, according to Dr. Lee, help prevent or even reverse age-related immunosuppression. Prescription drugs often have an adverse effect on the body, destroying vitamins or healthy intestinal flora. A coenzyme deficiency can result from the use of drugs prescribed for hypertension, for example. Supplements of coenzyme would not only prevent this deficiency, but could also act as a boost for the drug¡¯s beneficial effect.
If taken in its natural form, coenzyme Q10 is considered extremely safe. Since the benefits of coenzyme Q10 are usually only seen after about eight weeks, supplementation should be continued for at least two months.
